Amogy, a key partner of Maritime CleanTech, has successfully tested the world’s first ammonia-powered, carbon-free maritime vessel. The vessel, called the NH3 Kraken, is a retrofitted tugboat from 1957 and recently completed its first voyage on the Hudson River. This is a huge step toward reducing emissions in the global shipping industry.

This achievement highlights Amogy's cutting-edge ammonia-to-electrical power system. It showcases the power of collaboration within Maritime CleanTech's extensive network, including partners such as Sustainable Energy Catapult Centre, Seam, and Yara Clean Ammonia.

Paves the way for ammonia solutions

The success of the NH3 Kraken demonstrates ammonia’s potential as a carbon-free fuel for ships. As the shipping industry faces pressure to meet the International Maritime Organization’s (IMO) goal of net-zero emissions by 2050, this breakthrough brings ammonia closer to large-scale, commercial use in powering vessels.

Amogy's CEO, Seonghoon Woo, highlights the significance of this breakthrough:

"Governments across the globe and industry organizations like the IMO have set aggressive goals to reduce global carbon emissions. These goals seem daunting, but they're necessary—and our successful demonstration of the world's first carbon-free, ammonia-powered vessel proves that they're achievable. By demonstrating our technology on the water for the first time, we’ve gained invaluable knowledge that will help us move quickly to commercialization and real-world applications. The opportunity to decarbonize the maritime industry is within reach, and for Amogy, it’s just the beginning."

Collaboration drives success

This milestone was made possible through collaboration with Sustainable Energy Catapult Centre, where Amogy's innovative technology was rigorously tested. The catapult center offers world-leading infrastructure for validating next-generation clean maritime technologies.

Maritime CleanTech CEO Ada Jakobsen praises this collaborative success: "Amogy's achievement is a testament to what can be accomplished when innovative technologies meet the power of partnerships. Together, we are driving the industry forward, proving that zero-emission shipping is not a distant goal but a present reality. Congratulations to Amogy and partners for leading the way toward a greener future."

As the maritime industry continues to innovate, partnerships like these are laying the groundwork for a more sustainable, carbon-free future. With this milestone, the goal of zero-emission shipping is becoming a reality, one project at a time.
