Turning emissions into opportunity

Last week, Maritime CleanTech, in collaboration with Wärtsilä, Stavanger Municipality and Maritimt Forum, gathered experts, innovators and industry leaders for the first-ever Carbon Captured conference — exploring how onboard carbon capture (OCC) can accelerate shipping’s decarbonization journey.

With speakers from Solvang, Wärtsilä, Simon Møkster Shipping, ENOVA, HAV Group, DNV, Hy2Gen, SINTEF, Eksfin, CCB Energy and Maritime CleanTech, the event brought together a strong mix of perspectives from across the value chain.

Discussions throughout the day reflected a growing optimism around OCC – and for good reason. The technology shows real potential as a transitional solution that can significantly reduce emissions from existing vessels while the industry continues scaling up access to alternative fuels.

Key messages from the conference included:

  • The maritime sector needs stronger infrastructure and supply chains for small- and medium-scale CO₂
  • Confidence and investment among shipowners will follow once logistics and policy support are in place.
  • OCC is particularly relevant for retrofitting younger vessels still running on fossil fuels

At Maritime CleanTech, we believe that reaching net zero will require a portfolio of solutions - and onboard carbon capture is an essential part of that journey.
