Viking Energy conversion moves closer to first ammonia bunkering test

The conversion of Eidesvik's Viking Energy has reached another important milestone. Azane Fuel Solutions has received approval from the Norwegian Directorate for Civil Protection (DSB) to carry out a test bunkering of up to 73 tonnes of ammonia to the vessel.

Planned for October/November 2026 at Stord, Norway, the operation will be a key step in commissioning the ammonia fuel systems now being installed as part of the Apollo project. Ammonia will be transferred from up to three tank trailers, enabling the project partners to test the new bunkering arrangements and safety systems on board.

Ahead of the operation, Azane Fuel Solutions has reviewed the safety plans with the local fire and rescue service. The test will provide valuable practical experience with truck-to-ship ammonia bunkering before Viking Energy begins ammonia-fuelled offshore operations.

The test forms part of an agreement between Azane Fuel Solutions and Equinor covering ammonia supply and truck-to-ship bunkering, with the first deliveries scheduled for late 2026. Following the delivery of the ammonia engine and storage tank to Halsnøy Dock this spring, the approval brings Apollo another step closer to demonstrating ammonia-fuelled propulsion in real-world offshore service.

The EU-backed Apollo project is coordinated by Maritime CleanTech and brings together a consortium of eight European companies and institutions.
