Enova has unveiled its largest-ever funding allocation within the maritime transport sector. Several Maritime CleanTech partners were among the companies that received funding for their hydrogen and ammonia vessel projects.

Enova, a key government agency promoting green energy initiatives, has committed NOK 1.2 billion to support projects focused on integrating hydrogen and ammonia into maritime operations. Among the successful bidders in this competitive funding round were Maritime CleanTech partners Höegh Autoliners, Amon Maritime, and Napier.

Significance of the Investment

This significant investment underscores the urgent need for sustainable energy transitions within the maritime sector. Enova’s funding is expected to play a critical role in accelerating the adoption of green technology and developing comprehensive value chains for hydrogen and ammonia as viable energy carriers.

The recent transition barometers from DNV indicate that the current trajectory of the maritime industry is not aligned with climate targets. This highlights the pressing need for effective measures to expedite the deployment of new green technologies and support infrastructure development.

Positive Developments and Future Measures

“We are optimistic about Enova’s new programs, which mark a positive step towards a greener maritime future. However, additional measures are needed to stimulate investment in producing and distributing green hydrogen and ammonia. There is also a call for funded projects targeting offshore and passenger vessels,” says Ada Martine Jakobsen, CEO of Maritime CleanTech, adding:

“Complementary instruments like contracts for difference are crucial to address the cost disparity between new and conventional fuels during operational phases. Developing these tools will provide predictable conditions for both producers and users of new fuels, facilitating a smoother transition to sustainable maritime transport.”

Upcoming Opportunities

Enova has announced that the next application deadline for these vessel programs is September 27. Stakeholders and partners are encouraged to engage with funding and project advisors to explore upcoming project calls and opportunities for collaboration.

This historic funding initiative marks a significant step forward in Norway’s efforts to lead the global shift towards green maritime transport, setting a benchmark for sustainable practices in the industry.
