New industry position paper calls for action on offshore charging

New Industry Position Paper Calls for Action on Offshore Charging

What started as a UK workshop initiated and co-hosted by Maritime CleanTech through the Ocean Charger project, has now resulted in a joint industry position paper on offshore charging infrastructure for electric SOVs and CTVs.

Developed in collaboration with leading players across the offshore wind and maritime industries, the paper outlines key recommendations to remove barriers and accelerate the shift towards zero-emission offshore operations.

As maritime electrification gains momentum globally, offshore charging is emerging as a commercially viable solution — particularly for service vessels operating close to offshore wind farms. Combined with battery-powered vessels, offshore charging offers one of the most efficient and cost-effective pathways to decarbonise offshore maritime operations.

The paper, which is now delivered to UK stakeholders, highlights a clear next step for industry and policymakers alike: moving from pilot projects and demonstrations to long-term trials and commercial deployment.

– Offshore charging has strong potential to become a practical and scalable solution for zero-emission offshore operations. The technology is developing rapidly, but collaboration across industries will be essential to move from early projects to commercial implementation, says Øystein Huglen, Head of Innovation at Maritime CleanTech.

The position paper is signed by Maritime CleanTech, VARD,Equinor, Stillstrom, MJR Power & Automation, Bibby Marine, The CarbonTrust, North Star, Offshore Renewable Energy Catapult, Tidal Transit Limited, Siemens Gamesa and Operation Zero.
