Meet the Chief of the Navy
May 31 at 08:30 – 10:00
The Long-Term Defense Plan involves a massive investment in the Navy, which has its main base at Håkonsvern. This includes the construction of at least five new frigates and five submarines. The number of employees and conscripts will increase significantly. What does this mean for the defense city of Bergen? What are the implications for the civilian business sector throughout Vestland?
At this breakfast meeting hosted by Bergen Chamber of Commerce and Industry, you will meet Oliver Berdal, the Chief of the Navy. He will discuss the current state of our Navy and the opportunities and challenges ahead, as outlined in the government’s new Long-Term Plan proposal.
The government’s long-term plan proposes doubling the defense budget, which by 2036 will amount to NOK 166 billion. This year’s revised national budget includes an additional NOK 7 billion, meaning we have already reached NATO’s goal of spending at least two percent of GDP on defense.
Future vessel structures, technological development, and personnel shortages are among the most important issues for the Navy today and tomorrow. These cannot be solved by the Armed Forces in isolation. To successfully advance the Armed Forces into the future, good cooperation with the civilian sector is essential, including in areas such as education, technology development, and maintenance. Access to the best expertise and delivery capabilities in various fields is necessary.
Representatives from the shipyard industry and several other stakeholders will also participate in the meeting.
