North Sea Giant is one of the world’s largest contruction vessels where batteries are the main energy source. The vessel was rebuilt in 2018 to primarily use batteries, and cover the rest of the power requirement with diesel. The project is groundbreaking for the maritime industry, contributing to reduced costs and emissions. The vessel is operated by the shipowner company, North Sea Shipping. Cluster partners Wärtsilä and Corvus Energy were involved in the project as suppliers.
Important milestones in the project is to realize a power system for offshore vessels contributing to 30 % less emissions, reduced fuel consumption and gives a safer and more effective operation. The battery technology to be installed shall make it possible to operate the vessel in dynamic positioning with only one diesel engine supplied with battery.
