Digitalization and the use of data has had a huge impact in shipping, also when it comes to reducing emissions. Cluster partner Yxney’s software is now in use in close to 300 vessels, with a combined saving in emissions of more than 60.000 tonnes CO2 in 2020.

Since the start in 2016, Yxney has extended to two other Norwegian towns, and large companies across the maritime value chain are now among their customers. Their main product, the software Maress, combines available data from offshore and shipping vessels with other relevant data sets to provide insight in how to reduce fuel and emissions.

— Maress can show all vessels in a fleet in apples-to-apples comparisons in one single system. Maress makes it easy understand the footprint of operations, and to analyze the effect of individual energy-saving initiatives, or even whole programs. We are currently seeing a big demand in the industry for solutions on how to comply with the emissions trajectories towards the 2030 and 2050 industry targets. Maress helps vessel owners and energy companies to build a strategic perspective on how to achieve these necessary emissions reductions, says CCO in Yxney, Sindre S. Bornstein.

Transparency is the key to reaching the 2030 targets
Yxney believe everyone involved in the operation of an offshore vessel has aligned interests in reducing fuel consumption and emissions to air – the shipowner, the crew, contractors, and end client. Transparency is therefore a key ingredient in the functionality of Maress.

— Maress seamlessly provides the right information to all relevant decision-makers involved in the various operations. The result is that the energy efficiency improves, and the software brings transparency and clarity to the dialogue on energy usage and emissions from operations. This makes it easier for the users to take measures that will help the industry reach the 2030-targets, says Bornstein.

A unique cloud-based system
The system is cloud-based and no hardware installation is necessary – either on the vessel or in the office. Using existing data from the vessels´ IAS or ship management system is an effective way of reusing data to create value, and not least of saving the crew from extra work.

— Reducing fuel and energy consumption has an environmental-, monetary-, and not least a strategic effect. We provide real business value through functionality and insight, says Bornstein.

Innovation and growth through cluster collaboration
Yxney joined NCE Maritime CleanTech in 2018 and has since participated in several cluster activities. Today several cluster partners are customers of Yxney, and the company is continuously searching for updated knowledge and new partnerships.

— Being a cluster member of NCE Maritime CleanTech has been a great door opener for us, both when it comes to sources of knowledge – but also in terms of new business. Several of our existing customers are companies which we have met through cluster activities, says Bornstein.
